Vegan, Paleo, Low carb, Oh My!

        I love animals and believe they should be treated with respect, have access to open fields to graze, run around and live long happy lives. I also believe in bio-individuality when it comes to the human diet.  Everyone's body knows what is best for them, but we have lost touch with our inner communication and intuition. With that being said, when it comes to health and well-being it's all about experimentation to find out what makes you look and feel your best. 

       I found out at 25 that dairy wasn't working for me, I worked out daily, ate a well balanced diet but it included protein shakes, yogurt and cheese, I was completely inflamed and after cutting it out I lost 12 pounds! Recently, I was on a low fat, high carbohydrate vegan diet for two years. I thought that this was the best option especially because I agreed with the ethical reasons. I was so hungry all the time, has terrible periods and hormonal acne, I know now this was because my blood sugar was all over the place. I decided to include more animal products into my diet, I started with eggs and I felt more energy and strength and then I introduced fish twice a week and felt even better.

 

Diet is based on bio-individuality meaning one person's food could be another person's poison. 

I still eat mostly plants, but my body was asking for certain types of animal protein, grass fed, organic or wild caught. I'll be honest, I struggled with this for a while because I am an animal activist, but I couldn't continue to feel lethargic and have gastrointestinal issues almost daily like I was. I wanted to have normal energy levels, balanced hormones and a healthy digestive system.

 

     The most important thing when it comes to health is eating more fruits, vegetables, and whole grains if you can tolerate them. LISTEN TO YOUR BODY, I love vegetables and I also know that red peppers, chickpeas, kidney beans and several other things destroy my digestive system and it can take 3-4 days before I'm back in track… “Ain’t nobody got time for that!”

      There is a lot of pressure for people to give up all animal products lately, I completely understand the ethical and environmental reasons for this and I agree with them. At the same time I believe that some people thrive on a vegan diet, some people thrive as vegetarians and others do better with some animal protein. There are vegans and vegetarians who are very healthy, but there are others that eat French fries, Daiya cheese pizza and donuts daily and think they are doing themselves a favor.

 

       Food is fuel and should be giving you energy, a bowel movement at least every day and help you to maintain a healthy weight, if you feel lethargic, bloated and gassy after a meal it might be time to revisit your choice of fuel.  I challenge you to tune into your body and listen to what it needs. You can start this process by food logging every day for the next week. Write down EVERYTHING you eat and drink, and then write down how you feel right after you eat and two hours later. This will help you understand how the foods you are choosing effect your body.
